Hello guys, It’s Sarah Bijoy, back with another “why I couldn’t finish this book” blog post. Recently (by recently I mean in the last couple of years) the book Fourth Wing has become immensely popular on TikTok. Persuaded by the many readers on TikTok hyping this book up, I decided to give this a read. All I knew about the book was that it was a fantasy book with dragons in it. Boy, was I up for a wild ride.
From the first twenty pages of the book I could tell exactly where the plot was going to go. In between the main character, Violet, yapping about how small she was, she yapped about her sworn enemy Xaden. They vaguely mentioned how they were enemies, but it really didn’t make much sense. Apparently Xaden wants to kill Violet? Anyway, after Violet somehow survived the trial to get into Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider, she has many encounters with her enemy, and at some point (after like 100 pages and a really uncomfortable-to-read fight scene) they become lovers? Their arc doesn’t make any sense to me. Sadly, after those 100 pages, the story shifts from world-building to romance scenes, and I had to put down the book before I burned it.
This book may be appealing to those of you who enjoy romance and fantasy books but with more romance. It also might be appealing to people who like the enemies-to-lovers trope, if you ignore how poorly executed it was. However, the worldbuilding in this book is fairly decent. I really can’t think of anything else good to say about this book. People on BookTok need to read some actually good books before hyping up the most mid fantasy book I’ve ever read.
Anyways, that’s all from me! Give Fourth Wing a try if you dare! Bye!
P.S. I don't hate every book I read, I swear! I just read Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins, and it was SO GOOD! I cried at the end and everything, I absolutely love Suzanne Collins.
After reading this review I can see why you didn't like it. It might just be the fact that I don't like books like this but this one sounds pretty boring and confusing. I probably wasn't gonna read it anyway but now it definitely wont. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah, I have never heard of this book before, but I can see exactly why you didn't like it. The plot seems really unusual and I usually love books that tiktok recommends but this one just doesn't seem to be the one...
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah! This was a great review I love a well written take down of a book. This is somewhat off topic but I also recently read Sunrise on the Reaping and I agree it is so good! Suzzanne Collins is an amazing writer.
ReplyDeleteHello Sarah! I have heard a lot of mixed reviews concerning this book. I'm not really a romance fan, so this book isn't for me, but I think it would be so disappointing if I was ready for a decent plot. It's good to know you are still Suzanne Collins fan, so maybe I'll read more of her stuff! Thank you for posting!!
